Southgate Announces Departure After Euro 2024 Final Defeat

Southgate Led England to First World Cup Semi-Final in 28 Years and First Major Men's Final in 55 Years

England manager Gareth Southgate has announced that he will step down from his role after the European Championships in 2024. Southgate has been in charge of the Three Lions since 2016 and has led them to the first World Cup semi-final in 28 years in 2018 and the first major men's final in 55 years at Euro 2020.

Southgate's decision to leave his post comes after England's defeat by Spain in the Euro 2024 final. The Three Lions lost 2-1 in extra time, with Spain scoring the winning goal in the 118th minute. Southgate said that he felt it was the right time for him to step down and that he was proud of what he had achieved with England.

"I have decided to step down as England manager after the European Championships in 2024," Southgate said. "I have been incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to manage my country and I am grateful for the support I have received from the FA, the players, the staff and the fans. I would like to thank everyone who has been a part of this journey with me."

Southgate's departure will bring to an end a successful eight-year spell in charge of England. He has the highest win percentage of any England manager in history (67.7%) and has led the team to the semi-finals of the World Cup and the final of the European Championships.
