Gareth Southgate resigns as England manager

England manager Gareth Southgate has resigned two days after the team's defeat to Spain in the 2024 European Championship final.

Southgate's eight years in charge made him the most successful England manager in a generation, but he has decided to step down after failing to win a major trophy.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Southgate said: "It has been a great honour to manage the England national team and I am grateful to the FA for the opportunity. I am very proud of what we have achieved together and I wish the team all the best in the future."

Southgate took over as England manager in 2016 after Sam Allardyce was sacked following a newspaper sting. He led the team to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the final of Euro 2020, but they were beaten by Croatia and Italy respectively.

Southgate's resignation is likely to spark speculation about who will replace him as England manager. Among the favourites are Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard and Brentford manager Thomas Frank.
