The highly anticipated prequel to Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, has set a new record for HBO with its premiere episode drawing over 10 million viewers across linear channels and HBO Max on its first day, making it the biggest series premiere in the network's history.

The series, which stars Fabien Frankel, Matt Smith, Rhys Ifans, and Steve Toussaint, tells the story of the Targaryen civil war that takes place about 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The first season of House of the Dragon premiered on August 21, 2022, on Sky Atlantic.

In the premiere episode, Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy) is trying to hold the realm together after the tragic loss of her father, King Viserys I (Paddy Considine). Meanwhile, her uncle, Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith), is preparing for war.
